How Teams Qualified

To play in the Olympics, basketball teams had to go through a special qualification process. This meant they had to win certain games or tournaments before the Olympics to earn their spot. For the 5x5 game, each country could send one men's team and one women's team, each with 12 players. For the 3x3 game, each country could send one men's team and one women's team, each with 4 players (three on the court and one substitute).

In total, 20 different countries sent basketball teams to the Paris 2024 Olympics. This included 12 men's 5x5 teams, 12 women's 5x5 teams, 8 men's 3x3 teams, and 8 women's 3x3 teams.

Game Schedule

The basketball games were played almost every day from July 27 to August 11. The schedule was busy, with group games happening first, followed by knockout rounds like quarterfinals and semifinals. The final games for the medals were played towards the end of the competition.

5x5 Basketball

The 5x5 basketball tournament is the traditional game you usually see, with five players from each team on the court at a time.

Men's 5x5 Tournament

The men's 5x5 tournament featured 12 teams. They were divided into groups for the first part of the competition, called the preliminary round. After playing against other teams in their group, the best teams moved on to the knockout stage. This is where teams play single-elimination games, meaning if they lose, they are out of the tournament. The United States men's team won the gold medal, France won silver, and Serbia took the bronze.

Women's 5x5 Tournament

Just like the men's tournament, 12 women's teams competed in the 5x5 event. They also started with a preliminary round in groups, and then the top teams advanced to the knockout stage. The United States women's team won the gold medal, France won silver, and Australia earned the bronze medal.

3x3 Basketball

3x3 basketball is a faster, more exciting version of the game played on a half-court with three players per team. It's a newer Olympic sport, first introduced in 2020.

Men's 3x3 Tournament

Eight men's teams competed in the 3x3 tournament. They played against each other in a round-robin format, where every team played every other team. After this "pool" stage, the top teams moved to the knockout rounds. The Netherlands won the gold medal in the men's 3x3 event, France won silver, and Lithuania took home the bronze.

Women's 3x3 Tournament

Eight women's teams also competed in their 3x3 tournament, following the same pool and knockout stage format as the men. Germany won the gold medal in the women's 3x3 event, Spain won silver, and the United States earned the bronze medal.
