Derrick White (born July 2, 1994) is an American professional basketball player. He plays for the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association (NBA). People sometimes call him "the Buffalo."

Derrick White played college basketball for three years at Colorado–Colorado Springs. This was in NCAA Division II, a lower level of college sports. Then, he moved to NCAA Division I and played one year for the Colorado Buffaloes.

The San Antonio Spurs picked him in the 2017 NBA draft. In February 2022, he joined the Celtics. He helped them reach the 2022 NBA Finals. White became a regular starter in the 2022–23 season. He was chosen for the NBA All-Defensive Team twice. In 2024, he won his first NBA championship with the Celtics. They beat the Dallas Mavericks in five games. White also won a gold medal with the U.S. Olympic team in 2024.

Derrick White's High School Basketball Journey

Derrick White went to Legend High School in Parker, Colorado. He was part of the very first class to graduate from this new school. As a freshman, he played on a basketball team with 11 other freshmen. They won only one game in their league that year.

By his senior year, White was a top player. He scored about 17 points per game. He also grabbed almost 4 rebounds and made 3 assists per game. He scored over 1,000 points during his high school career. When he graduated in 2012, he was a six-foot tall guard. In 2023, Legend High School honored him as the first person in their Hall of Fame.

Derrick White's College Basketball Experience

Derrick White was not a highly sought-after player when he finished high school. No big four-year colleges offered him a scholarship. He was just barely 6 feet tall when he graduated. He had grown two inches during his senior year.

A coach named Jeff Culver showed a lot of interest in White. Culver became the head coach at NCAA Division II's Colorado–Colorado Springs. He offered White a special payment for his room and board. White's father had grown taller in college, and doctors thought Derrick might grow to 6 feet 5 inches. He almost reached that height by the time he started at Colorado–Colorado Springs.

With his new height and athletic skills, White became a star at UCCS. He started every game for three years. He left as the school's all-time leader in points (1,912) and assists (343). In his junior year, he averaged 25.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 5.2 assists. He led his team to the 2015 NCAA tournament. He was named an All-American.

After his junior year, White decided to move to NCAA Division I. He transferred to Colorado to play in the Pac-12 Conference. This is one of the best college basketball conferences. He had to sit out the 2015–16 season because of NCAA rules. In his one season with the Buffaloes, he did very well. He averaged 18.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game. White was named to the first-team All-Pac-12 and the All-Defensive team.
