Early Life and Acting Dreams
Mark Anthony McDermott was born on October 26, 1961, in Waterbury, Connecticut. He has a younger sister named Robin. Dylan and his sister were raised by their grandmother, Avis, in Waterbury.
As a teenager, Dylan often visited his biological father in Greenwich Village, New York. His father owned a bar there, and Dylan even worked in it. He felt a bit shy as a teenager, but he loved to imitate famous actors like Marlon Brando.
In 1979, Dylan graduated from Holy Cross High School. His father's third wife, playwright Eve Ensler, adopted Dylan when he was 15. She really encouraged him to become an actor and even wrote parts for him in her plays! Dylan went to Fordham University and also studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City.
Dylan McDermott's Acting Career
Dylan McDermott started his acting career in movies in 1987 with Hamburger Hill. He then appeared in the 1989 film Steel Magnolias with Julia Roberts. He also starred in Twister, a movie about a man trying to save his family from a tornado.
His big break came with the film In the Line of Fire. After that, he landed his most famous role as Bobby Donnell in the TV show The Practice. This show made him a big star, and People magazine even named him one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" in both 1998 and 2000! In 1994, he played Bryan Bedford in the popular movie Miracle on 34th Street.
In 2004, Dylan starred in a four-part TV series called The Grid, where he played an FBI agent. He also returned to theater in 2006 for a play called The Treatment. From 2009 to 2010, Dylan played a police officer in the TNT show Dark Blue.
Horror and Action Roles
In 2011, Dylan joined the popular horror TV series American Horror Story on FX. He played Dr. Ben Harmon in the first season, Murder House. Because American Horror Story is an anthology series (meaning each season tells a new story with new characters), he returned in the second season, Asylum, as a different character named Johnny Morgan. He also appeared in later seasons like Apocalypse and 1984.
Dylan also appeared in several movies in 2012, including The Campaign and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. In 2013, he starred in the action thriller Olympus Has Fallen, playing a Secret Service Agent.
Recent TV Work
In 2013, Dylan starred in the CBS TV series Hostages as an FBI agent. In 2014, he played Detective Jack Larsen in another CBS show called Stalker.
More recently, in 2020, Dylan starred in the Netflix limited series Hollywood. He then took on the role of crime lord Richard Wheatley in the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit spin-off, Law & Order: Organized Crime, which started in 2021. In April 2022, Dylan joined the cast of FBI: Most Wanted as the new lead character, Supervisory Special Agent Remy Scott.
