Dylan Olsen's Hockey Journey
Starting in Amateur Hockey
Dylan Olsen began his hockey journey in junior leagues. Even though he was drafted by the Medicine Hat Tigers in a league called the Western Hockey League (WHL), he chose to play for the Camrose Kodiaks in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). This choice allowed him to keep his eligibility to play college hockey later.
In his first full season with the Kodiaks (2007–08), Dylan was a strong player. He helped his team have the best record in the league. The Kodiaks then won the 2008 AJHL championship. They also won the Doyle Cup, which means they were the champions of Western Canada. They made it all the way to the final game of the 2008 Royal Bank Cup, a big national tournament.
Dylan continued to improve his skills in the 2008–09 season with the Kodiaks. After his time in junior hockey, he played college hockey for the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs during the 2009–10 season.
Playing as a Professional
Dylan Olsen signed his first professional contract with the Chicago Blackhawks on December 31, 2010. This happened while he was playing for Team Canada in the 2011 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. After that tournament, he joined the Rockford IceHogs, which was the Blackhawks' minor league team.
He played his first NHL playoff game on April 17, 2012, with the Chicago Blackhawks.
During the 2013–14 season, Dylan was traded from the Blackhawks to the Florida Panthers. This trade happened on November 14, 2013. He scored his very first NHL goal as a member of the Panthers on December 5, 2013, against the Winnipeg Jets.
After the 2015–16 season, Dylan became a free agent, meaning he could sign with any team. He later accepted a try-out with the Calgary Flames in 2017. He then signed a one-year deal with the Adirondack Thunder in the ECHL.
In 2018, Dylan decided to play hockey overseas. He signed a one-year deal with the Nottingham Panthers in England, who play in the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL). He also played for HK Nitra in Slovakia. In 2020, he returned to North America to play in the ECHL again, first with the South Carolina Stingrays and then the Wichita Thunder. He played his last professional games with the Wichita Thunder in the 2021–22 season.
Personal Life
Dylan Olsen's father, Darryl Olsen, was also a professional hockey player. Darryl played one game for the Calgary Flames in the 1991–92 NHL season. He also spent several years playing in minor leagues, including in Salt Lake City, Utah, which is where Dylan was born.
