Eaglenest Mountain, sometimes called Eagles Nest Mountain, is a cool peak in Haywood County, North Carolina. You can find it about 2 miles south of Maggie Valley, North Carolina. This mountain is part of the Plott Balsams, which are a range within the huge Appalachian Mountains.

Eaglenest Mountain is also very close to North Eaglenest Mountain, which is even taller! North Eaglenest Mountain used to be known as Mount Junaluska. It's the highest mountain you can see overlooking Lake Junaluska from the southwest side. The town of Hazelwood was once the closest place you could reach by road, but it became part of Waynesville in 1995.

The Story of the Eagle Nest Hotel

A long time ago, in 1900, a person named S. C. Satterthwaite from Waynesville, North Carolina built a hotel. It was called the Eagle Nest Hotel and was located very high up, at about 5,050 feet. This hotel was built on a mountain range he called The Junaluskas, on a peak that was then known as Mount Junaluska. Today, we call that peak North Eaglenest Mountain.

Sadly, the Eagle Nest Hotel was destroyed by a fire. The cause of the fire is not known, but it happened on April 22, 1918.
