Eakly is a small town located in Caddo County, Oklahoma, in the United States. In 2010, about 338 people lived there. The latest count in 2020 showed 293 residents.

History of Eakly

A post office opened in Eakly in March 1902. At that time, this area was still known as Oklahoma Territory. For many years, people could not officially buy land in Eakly. This was because the town's map, called a "plat," was not filed until the 1920s.

Only two groups were allowed to buy land early on. The Methodist church bought a spot in 1914. The Bank of Eakly bought land in 1920. Everyone else who wanted to build had to rent the land instead of owning it.

Population Changes Over Time

Eakly's first official count of people was in 1940, with 231 residents. The population went down a bit during World War II. In 1950, there were 191 people. This was likely because many people went to serve in the military or moved to bigger cities for war jobs.

The number of people grew in the 1960s and 1970s. It reached its highest point in 1980, with 452 residents. After that, the population dropped to 277 in 1990. It has not been as high as 1980 since then.

Eakly as an Agricultural Center

Even without a filed town map or a railroad, Eakly became a successful farming area. In its early years, cotton farming was the main activity. After World War II, farmers started using irrigation in this part of Oklahoma. This allowed them to grow many different kinds of crops.

By the 1960s, peanut farming became the most important type of agriculture. Eakly officially became a town in 1957. A factory that made houses opened in 1970, but it closed down soon after.

School System Merger

In 1999, the Eakly school system made a big decision. After 78 years, it decided to join with the school system in Hydro. Hydro is about 12 miles (19 km) north of Eakly.

This change happened because of a state law from 1990. This law offered money to small school districts that agreed to combine. The new combined school district is now called the Hydro-Eakly District.
