Ealhmund of Kent facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ealhmund was a king of Kent in the year 784. Many believe he was the father of King Egbert, who later became a powerful king of Wessex and also ruled Kent. A historical book called The Life of King Alfred by Asser says Ealhmund was the son of a person named Eafa.

Who Was King Ealhmund?

We don't have many records about King Ealhmund. He didn't make any coins, which was common for kings at the time. The only real proof we have of him is a short note from a special document called a charter. This charter is from 784.

What Did the Charter Say?

In this charter, King Ealhmund gave some land to the Abbot (the head monk) of Reculver. The document clearly calls him "Ealmundus rex Canciæ," which means "Ealhmund, King of Kent."

Why Did His Rule End?

Just one year later, in 785, another powerful king named Offa of Mercia seemed to be in charge of Kent directly. King Offa issued his own charter without mentioning any local king of Kent. This suggests that Ealhmund's rule in Kent was quite short.

Ealhmund's Family Connections

Most historians agree that King Ealhmund is the same person mentioned in old family records. These records are found in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, a very important historical book.

Ealhmund and King Egbert

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle was put together during the time of Alfred the Great. It states that King Egbert of Wessex was the son of an Ealhmund. This Ealhmund was the son of Eafa, the grandson of Eoppa, and the great-grandson of Ingild. Ingild was the brother of King Ine of Wessex. This family line connects Ealhmund to Cerdic, who founded the House of Wessex. This means Ealhmund was part of a very important royal family.

Later Records and Kentish Ties

Later additions to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle also mention Ealhmund's rule in Kent in 784. One version even clearly states that he was the father of Egbert. Because Ealhmund became King of Kent and his son Egbert also had a Kentish-sounding name, some people thought Ealhmund's mother might have been from Kent's royal family. However, recent studies don't support this idea.

A Possible Royal Plan?

One historian, Heather Edwards, has suggested that Ealhmund was likely a prince from Kent. She thinks his family tree might have been changed or "forged." This would have been done to make sure his son Egbert had the right royal background from Cerdic to become king in Wessex.
