Earl Dewitt Hutto (born May 12, 1926 – died December 14, 2020) was an American politician. He served as a U.S. Representative for Florida. This means he helped make laws for the country.

Early Life and Career
Earl Hutto was born in Midland City, Alabama. He went to public schools in Dale County. In 1949, he earned a degree from Troy State University.
He served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. After his time in the Navy, he went back to school. He studied broadcasting at Northwestern University in 1951.
Earl Hutto worked in television for many years. He was a sports director at WEAR-TV in Pensacola, Florida from 1954 to 1961. He also worked at WSFA-TV in Montgomery, Alabama and WJHG-TV in Panama City, Florida. From 1973 to 1979, he ran his own advertising business.
Political Career
Earl Hutto became a politician as a member of the Democratic Party. He was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1972. He was reelected two more times, serving until 1978.
Serving in Congress
In 1978, Earl Hutto was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He represented Florida's 1st congressional district. He served eight terms in Congress, from January 3, 1979, to January 3, 1995.
During his time in Congress, Hutto was known as a more conservative Democrat. This meant his views were often similar to those of Republicans. His district in Florida also tended to vote for more conservative leaders.
Election Success
Earl Hutto was very popular in his district. From 1978 to 1988, he always won his elections easily. He often received more than 60 percent of the votes.
For example, in 1984, he ran for reelection without anyone running against him. This happened even when a Republican president won many votes in his district. In 1988, he won with 66 percent of the vote.
Later Elections
In 1990, Earl Hutto faced a tougher election. A Republican challenger named Terry Ketchel made the race closer. Hutto won with 52 percent of the vote.
They ran against each other again in 1992, and Hutto again won with 52 percent. In 1994, he decided not to run for reelection. After he left office, a Republican, Joe Scarborough, won the seat. Since then, no Democrat has won more than 40% of the vote in that district.
Death
Earl Hutto passed away in December 2020. He was 94 years old.
