Richard Earle "Earl" Johnson (born March 10, 1891 – died November 19, 1965) was an American runner. He was famous for his skills in cross country races. Cross country running is a sport where athletes run long distances over natural terrain. This includes grass, dirt, and hills. Earl Johnson was a very important athlete in his time. He won medals at the Olympic Games. He also won national championships.

Early Life and National Champion
Earl Johnson was born in Woodstock, Virginia. He grew up to become a talented long-distance runner. In 1921, he became the National Champion in cross country. This meant he was the best cross country runner in the United States that year.
He almost won the championship again in 1922. A Finnish runner named Ville Ritola beat his course record. However, since Ritola was not American, Earl Johnson was still the first American to finish. This made him the top American runner for a second year.
Working Life
Earl Johnson worked at the Edgar Thomson Steel Works. This was a large steel factory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was quite rare for a black athlete to be so successful in sports during his time. He showed great talent and determination.
Olympic Achievements
Earl Johnson represented the United States at the 1924 Summer Olympics. These Olympic Games were held in Paris, France. He competed in the cross country events.
He won two medals at these Games:
- He earned a silver medal in the team cross country event. His teammates were Arthur Studenroth and August Fager. Together, they ran as a strong team.
