Earl of Linlithgow facts for kids
The Earl of Linlithgow was a special title given to important people in Scotland a long time ago. It was part of the Peerage of Scotland, which is like a list of noble titles. This title was first created in the year 1600 for a man named Alexander Livingston, 7th Lord Livingston. When he became Earl, he also received a smaller title called Lord Livingston and Callendar.
Later, in 1695, the Earldom of Linlithgow joined up with another title, the Earldom of Callendar. This second title had been created earlier, in 1641, for a younger son of the first Earl of Linlithgow.
The fifth Earl of Linlithgow (who was also the fourth Earl of Callendar) lost his titles in 1716. This happened because he took part in a historical event called the Jacobite Rising of 1715. Because of his actions, all his noble titles were taken away. The main home of the Earls of Linlithgow was Callendar House in Falkirk, Scotland. Today, Callendar House is a museum that you can visit!
