What is a Marquess?

A Marquess is a very high rank in the British nobility. It is above an Earl but below a Duke. These titles are often passed down through families. The family motto, At spes non fracta, means "But my hope is not broken."

The Hope Family History

The Hope family has a long and interesting history. Their story begins with Sir Charles Hope. He was the grandson of Sir James Hope. In 1703, Sir Charles Hope received several important titles. These included Lord Hope, Viscount Aithrie, and Earl of Hopetoun. These titles were part of the Peerage of Scotland.

Early Earls of Hopetoun

The first Earl, Charles Hope, also served as the Lord Lieutenant of Linlithgowshire. He was also the Governor of the Bank of Scotland. His son, the second Earl, took over the titles after him.

The third Earl, James Hope-Johnstone, was Lord Lieutenant of Linlithgowshire too. He also represented Scotland in the House of Lords. In 1809, he received another title: Baron Hopetoun. This was a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He did not have any sons, so the title passed to his half-brother.

Important Family Members and Their Roles

The fourth Earl, John Hope, was a general in the army. He also served as a Member of Parliament for Linlithgow. In 1814, he was given the title Baron Niddry.

His son, the fifth Earl, also became Lord Lieutenant of Linlithgowshire. The sixth Earl, John Alexander Hope, continued this tradition.

The seventh Earl, John Adrian Louis Hope, was a very important person. He worked as a colonial administrator and was a Conservative politician. He served as the Governor of Victoria in Australia. He was also the first ever Governor-General of Australia. Later, he became the Secretary of State for Scotland.

In 1902, because of his important work, the seventh Earl was created the Marquess of Linlithgow. This is how the Marquessate title began.

Later Marquesses of Linlithgow

The second Marquess, Victor Alexander John Hope, was also a politician. He served as Viceroy of India from 1936 to 1943. This was a very important role during a difficult time.

His son, Charles William Frederick Hope, became the third Marquess. He was Lord Lieutenant of West Lothian for many years.

Today, the titles are held by the fourth Marquess, Adrian John Charles Hope. He became Marquess in 1985.

The Next Generation

The person who is expected to inherit the title next is the current Marquess's eldest son. His name is Andrew Christopher Victor Arthur Charles Hope. He is known as the Earl of Hopetoun.

Andrew's eldest son, Charles Adrian Bristow William Hope, is next in line after him. He is known as Viscount Aithrie.
