East Calgary was once a small village in Alberta, Canada. It existed for only a few years before becoming part of the larger Calgary area. Today, you can find the land where East Calgary used to be on the north side of 17 Avenue SE (Highway 1A). This area is located between 60 Street SE and 84 Street SE within the modern City of Calgary.

What Was East Calgary?

East Calgary was a special kind of community called a "village." In Alberta, a village is a small, self-governing area. East Calgary was officially a village for just over three years, from 1916 to 1919.

How East Calgary Became Part of Calgary

The Village's Beginning

The Village of East Calgary officially started on April 17, 1916. This means it became its own local government. It could make its own rules and manage its own services.

The Village's End

However, East Calgary's time as a village was short. On July 17, 1919, the village was officially dissolved. This means it stopped being its own separate government. Its land then came under the control of a larger rural area. This area was known as the Municipal District of Shepard No. 220. Later, this land became part of the City of Calgary.

Where Was East Calgary Located?

Its Original Boundaries

The Village of East Calgary covered an area made up of four "quarter sections" of land. These are specific land divisions used in Canada. This land was located on the north side of 17 Avenue SE (Highway 1A). It stretched between 60 Street SE and 84 Street SE.

East Calgary Today

Today, a major highway called Stoney Trail (Highway 216) runs through the eastern part of where the village once stood. Much of the former village is now part of Calgary's busy residential areas. These include the neighbourhoods of Applewood Park, Penbrooke Meadows, and Red Carpet. So, while the village of East Calgary no longer exists, its land is still a vibrant part of Calgary.
