East Camden is a small city in Ouachita County, Arkansas, United States. In 2010, about 931 people lived there. It is part of the larger Camden area.
East Camden started as a planned community. It was built to support the nearby Shumaker Naval Ammunition Depot. This depot was a big military base. The city was first called Billkitts Rental Housing.
A.T. Smith was the chief engineer for the naval depot. He designed the layout of East Camden. He even named the streets! Later, a U.S. Senator helped transfer the naval base to a company. This company was called Brown and Root.
Brown and Root turned the old naval base into an industrial park. This park attracted companies that work on defense projects. It had special features like a rocket range and underground storage. It also had good railroad access and a low cost for workers. As part of this change, land was given to start a college. This college is now Southern Arkansas University Tech.
