East Duke, now known simply as Duke, is a small town in Jackson County, Oklahoma, in the United States. In 2020, about 394 people lived there. It is located about 14 miles west of Altus, which is the county seat. You can find Duke where US Route 62 and Oklahoma State Highway 34 meet.
History of Duke
The town of Duke was first started in 1890. At one point, there was a disagreement about where a new railroad would be built. This led to the community splitting into two parts: an older area called West Duke and a newer area called East Duke.
The people in the community eventually made up in 1915. They even had a special event to show they were friends again. West Duke did not last, so East Duke became the main town and is now just called Duke.
