East Lyn Valley facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

East Lyn Valley is a beautiful valley located in Exmoor, a special area that covers parts of northern Devon and western Somerset in England. It's a place known for its stunning natural beauty and interesting history.

What is the East Lyn Valley?

The East Lyn Valley is named after the East Lyn River, which flows through it. This river starts from several smaller streams, like Hoar Oak Water, near a place called Weir Water. The East Lyn River eventually meets the West Lyn River at Lynmouth, a charming village by the sea.

How the Valley Was Formed

Long, long ago, during the Ice Age, huge sheets of ice moved across the land. This movement, called glacial erosion, slowly carved out the valley. It made one side of the valley very steep, which is why it looks so dramatic today. This steep shape also played a part in a big flood that happened in 1952.

Wildlife in the Valley

The East Lyn Valley is a fantastic place for nature lovers because it's full of different kinds of wildlife. You can often spot birds like dippers, which are known for bobbing up and down in the water, and elegant grey wagtails. You might also see large herons standing still by the river, waiting to catch fish.

East Lyn Valley in Stories

This beautiful valley has inspired many writers! It was the main setting for the famous novel Lorna Doone by R. D. Blackmore. In the story, the church at Oare is an important location. Another book set here is The Secret of Crickley Hall by James Herbert. The village of Brendon also overlooks the valley, and its St Brendan's church has been there since 1738.
