East Mount Carmel is a small community in Gibson County, Indiana. It's located in the southwestern part of White River Township. About 50 people live in this quiet place. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
A Look Back: East Mount Carmel's History
East Mount Carmel was started around the year 1885. It got its name because it is located east of a city called Mount Carmel, Illinois.
For a short time, East Mount Carmel had its own post office. This post office was open from 1897 to 1907. It was named Fetters to avoid confusion with another town in Indiana called Carmel, Indiana.
Where is East Mount Carmel?
East Mount Carmel is found at 38°23′36″N 87°44′41″W / 38.39333°N 87.74472°W. It sits right across the Wabash River from Mount Carmel, Illinois.
Just north of the community, the Patoka River flows into the Wabash River. To the south and east, you'll find the large Gibson Generating Station complex. This area is known for its rivers and power plant.
