History of Mount Carmel
The 1877 Tornado
On June 4, 1877, a very strong tornado hit Mount Carmel. It was an F4 tornado, which means it was incredibly powerful. The tornado caused a lot of damage, especially between Third and Fifth streets. The wind was estimated to be 150 miles per hour (240 km/h) and lasted for almost two minutes.
A local newspaper at the time described how roofs, windows, doors, and even clothing were flying through the air. Many items were carried more than a mile away. Sadly, at least 16 people died, and many more were hurt. About 20 businesses and 100 homes were damaged or destroyed.
Grand Rapids Hotel and Resort
In the 1920s, there was a hotel in Wabash County called the Grand Rapids Hotel. It was located near the Grand Rapids Dam and Hanging Rock on the Wabash River.
The hotel was owned by Frederick Hinde Zimmerman. For nine years, people from all over the United States came to stay at this hotel.
Geography
Mount Carmel is located on the Wabash River, which forms the border with Indiana. The city covers about 5 square miles (12.82 km²), with most of it being land and a small part being water.
The city was once famous because of its bridge over the Wabash River, which was featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not!. The bridge was painted white on the Illinois side and black on the Indiana side, showing the state line. This old bridge was replaced in 2011 with a new, wider one. The old bridge was then taken down in 2012.
Earthquake Activity
Mount Carmel is in an area known as the Wabash Valley seismic zone, where earthquakes can happen. On April 18, 2008, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake was centered near the city. Just a few hours later, a 4.6 magnitude aftershock also shook the area. People felt these earthquakes across southern Illinois and even in parts of Missouri, like St. Louis, which is about 123 miles (198 km) away. Smaller aftershocks continued for several months.
