History of Allendale

The 1989 Tornado
On January 7, 1989, a very strong tornado hit Allendale. This tornado was an F4 on the Fujita scale. It destroyed a large part of the town. About 55 people were hurt.
The tornado directly hit the Allendale school. The part of the school built in the 1960s was completely destroyed. However, the high school section, which was older (built in the late 1920s), did not get much damage. After the tornado, money was raised to build a brand new school. This new school was for elementary and middle school students. The community had a strong motto: "NEVER BACK DOWN, NEVER GIVE UP."
