Harry H. Hinde (September 17, 1865 – September 21, 1942) was an American inventor and politician. He was known for designing airplanes and holding several patents. Harry Hinde also served as a representative in the state of Missouri. He was a successful businessman and entrepreneur.

Harry Hinde's Early Life
Harry Hinde was born on September 17, 1865. His parents were Edmund C. Hinde and Phoebe Martin Hinde. His family had a history in Illinois. His grandfather, Thomas S. Hinde, founded the town of Mount Carmel, Illinois.
Harry grew up in Mount Carmel. He went to local schools there. After finishing school, he started a business. He and his cousin, Frederick Hinde Zimmerman, opened a general store. This store was in Arkansas. The business did not succeed, so they both left Arkansas.
Harry then moved to Kansas City, Missouri. He began working in the newspaper business. He worked with newspapers and printing for three years. After this, he decided to enter politics.
Serving in the Missouri Government
Before 1905, Harry Hinde was elected to public office. He became a member of the Missouri State Legislature. This is like being a state representative. He represented Kansas City, Missouri.
He served several terms in the legislature. This means he was re-elected multiple times. In 1905, he decided to move to California. He became a citizen of Riverside, California, in 1907.
An Inventor and Aircraft Designer
Harry Hinde was very creative. He spent much of his life inventing things. He was especially interested in designing aircraft. He received several patents for his inventions. A patent protects an invention.
In the early 1900s, he focused on monoplane designs. Monoplanes are airplanes with one set of wings. He was a member of the Aero Club of California. This club was for people interested in flying.
Hinde invented a "heavier than air" flying machine. He received patents for this invention. Some experts at the time said his invention was revolutionary. They believed it changed how people thought about flying. Harry Hinde studied aeronautics, the science of flight, for over 17 years.
Harry Hinde's Later Years
Later in his life, Harry Hinde started a business. It was called the Hinde Hardware Company. This company was located in Riverside, California. It was a successful business.
After his uncle, Captain Charles T. Hinde, passed away, Harry received a large inheritance. Because of this, he decided to retire from his business. He inherited his uncle's house, called the Kirk House. This house was in Coronado, California. Harry lived there with his family until 1922. He later sold the house.
In 1916, Hinde tried to return to politics. He ran for state senator in Riverside, California. However, he did not win the election. He came in third place. Harry Hinde was also listed as a supporter of the American Literary Association in 1919.
Harry Hinde passed away on September 21, 1942. He is buried in Evergreen Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Riverside, California.
