East Tāmaki

East Tāmaki is a busy area in Auckland, New Zealand. It used to be mostly farmland before the 1960s. Now, it's a big industrial area with many businesses.

A special place here is Smales Mountain. It has an old Māori fort (called a ), a stone garden, and an old church. A newer, very famous building is the Fo Guang Shan Temple. It opened in 2007 and was the biggest Buddhist temple in New Zealand at the time.

History of East Tāmaki

The East Tāmaki area has a rich history! It was formed by volcanoes, just like much of Auckland.

Ancient Times and Māori Heritage

One important place is Te Puke o Tara, which means 'The Hill of Tara'. This hill was once home to a powerful Māori chief named Tara Te Irirangi from the Ngāi Tai tribe. It was also the site of a , which was a fortified village built on a hill.

Another important hill was Mātanginui, also known as Greenmount. Both Te Puke o Tara and Mātanginui were once volcanoes. The areas around these hills were great for gardening because of the rich volcanic soil and fresh water. Many Māori people lived here before Europeans arrived.

European Settlement

Later, European settlers came to the area. The Styaks family farmed near Mātanginui. They named their farm "Green Bank" after their home in Northern Ireland. For a while, the whole area was known as "Farnsworth."

Important Places to See

East Tāmaki has some interesting old buildings and places:

  • St Johns Church is on East Tamaki Road. It was built in 1862 for Gideon Smales. This church is made of stone and has a neo-Gothic style. When Smales died, he gave the church to be used by both Anglican and Methodist church groups.
  • Hampton Park Estate is also on East Tamaki Road. It used to be a large garden, designed like the famous garden at Hampton Court in England.
  • St Paul's Church is on Chapel Road and was built in 1886.
  • Hawthorn Dene is on Botany Road. It was built around 1856.

People of East Tāmaki

East Tāmaki covers about 10.26 square kilometers. In 2018, about 489 people lived here. This was an increase of 30.4% since 2013.

How East Tāmaki is Managed

The area of East Tāmaki is managed by the Auckland Council. This council helps make decisions about local services and developments. It is located southeast of the main Auckland city center.

East Tāmaki is a very important business area for Auckland. It is the largest "industrial precinct" in the city. This means it has many factories, warehouses, and distribution centers.
