The Easter Bilby is a special Australian way to celebrate Easter. Instead of the traditional Easter Bunny, Australians sometimes use a bilby. This helps to raise awareness and money for a unique Australian animal.

Why an Easter Bilby?

Bilbies are amazing native Australian animals. They are a type of marsupial, like kangaroos or koalas. Sadly, bilbies are endangered, meaning their numbers are very low.

To help these special creatures, people in Australia sell bilby-shaped chocolates and other gifts. The money raised from these sales goes towards protecting bilbies. It helps conservation groups work to save their homes and increase their numbers. This also teaches everyone about the importance of protecting Australia's unique wildlife.

How the Idea Started

The idea of the Easter Bilby began many years ago. In March 1968, a young girl named Rose-Marie Dusting, who was 9 years old, wrote a story. Her story was called "Billy The Aussie Easter Bilby." She later published it as a book. This story helped to get people interested in saving the bilby.

In 1991, another person named Nicholas Newland also developed the idea. He was from the 'Foundation for Rabbit-Free Australia'. He wanted to show how much damage feral rabbits cause to the Australian environment. He hoped the Easter Bilby would replace the Easter Bunny. This would highlight native Australian animals instead of introduced ones.

Chocolate Bilbies and Books

The very first chocolate Easter Bilbies were sold at the Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary was owned by John Wamsley at the time.

Today, several chocolate companies help support bilby conservation. These include Pink Lady and Haigh's Chocolates. They donate money from their Easter Bilby sales.

Australian authors have also written books about the Easter Bilby. Irena Sibley wrote three Easter Bilby books between 1994 and 2000. Her most popular one was The Bilbies' First Easter.

In 1993, Jeni Bright wrote "Burra Nimu, the Easter Bilby." This story is about a shy but brave bilby named Burra. He decides to save his land from rabbits and foxes. Burra and his friends paint Easter eggs to give to children. They ask the children for help. But first, they must outsmart the rabbit army!
