About the Ebenaceae Family
Most plants in the Ebenaceae family are evergreen. This means they keep their leaves all year round. They usually grow in warm, tropical, and subtropical areas. Some species, however, are deciduous. These plants lose their leaves in colder seasons. They are found in places with more moderate temperatures.
Key Plants in the Family
The Diospyros group is the largest. It has between 450 and 500 species. You can find Diospyros plants all over the world's tropical regions. The most different types of Diospyros are found in Indonesia and Malaysia. This group includes the famous ebony trees, known for their dark wood. It also includes persimmon trees, which grow tasty fruits.
The Euclea group is smaller. It has about 20 species. These plants are native to Africa, the Comoro Islands, and the Arabian Peninsula.
Special Features of Ebenaceae
One special thing about plants in the Ebenaceae family is their fruit. The calyx (the green leaf-like parts at the base of a flower) stays attached to the fruit even after it ripens. This "persistent calyx" is a unique feature of this plant family.
