The Eccles Avenue Historic District is a special neighborhood in Ogden, Utah. It is also known as the David Eccles Subdivision. This area is famous for its beautiful old homes. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This means it is a very important historical place in the United States.

Exploring Eccles Avenue's History

Most of the amazing homes in this district were built between 1910 and 1930. Many of the biggest houses were built when the neighborhood first started.

Famous Families of Eccles Avenue

Many important families lived here. The Browning family lived here. They were related to John Moses Browning, a famous gun inventor. The Eccles family also lived here. They were descendants of David Eccles, a very rich businessman from the 1800s.

Other notable residents included E.O. Wattis. He was part of the Utah Construction Company. Families like Patterson, Dumke, Healy, Rowe, and Larkin also made their homes here. Later, Marriner S. Eccles lived in the district. He was a very important person. He was the head of the Federal Reserve for a time. He also helped start First Security Bank.

Who Designed These Homes?

The main architects for these buildings were Leslie S. Hodgson and Eber F. Piers. Leslie S. Hodgson was part of a firm called Hodgson & McClenahan. They designed many famous Art Deco buildings in Ogden. These include Ogden High School and the U.S. Forest Service Building. They also designed the Peery's Egyptian Theatre.

Architectural Styles You Can See

Many of the large buildings in the Eccles Avenue Historic District use the Prairie School architectural style. This style often features strong horizontal lines. It also has wide, overhanging eaves.

But you can see other styles too! Some homes are in the Craftsman style. These often have natural materials and handmade details. Others are Bungalow style, which are usually smaller, cozy homes. You might also spot some Tudor style houses. These often look like old English cottages.

Today, most of these buildings are private homes. A few are used for businesses.
