Early Life and Career

Ece Temelkuran was born in İzmir, Turkey. She started her career as a writer for newspapers. From 2000 to 2009, she wrote columns for Milliyet. Later, she wrote for Habertürk until January 2012. She also hosted shows on Habertürk TV from 2010 to 2011.

Speaking Out and Awards

Ece Temelkuran was known for writing articles that questioned the government. She lost her job at Habertürk because of her strong opinions. This included her articles about how the government handled certain events in December 2011.

Even so, she was named Turkey's "most read political columnist" twice. Her articles have also appeared in big international newspapers. These include The Guardian, The New York Times, and Der Spiegel.

She studied law at Ankara University. She has lived in different cities like Beirut and Paris while writing her books.

In 2008, she visited the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. There, she worked on her book Deep Mountain, Across the Turkish-Armenian Divide.

She has won several awards for her writing. For her book Turkey: The Insane and the Melancholy, she received the Ambassador Of New Europe Award. Her novel Women Who Blow On Knots won the First Book award at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

In 2008, she received the Ayşe Zarakolu Freedom of Thought Award. This award is given by the Human Rights Association of Turkey.

Recent Work and Ideas

From 2021 to 2023, Ece Temelkuran was a fellow at The New Institute in Hamburg. She worked on a project about new ideas for people who want to make society better. She also helps guide groups like Progressive International and Democracy Next.

In 2019, she published a very important book called How to Lose a Country: The 7 Steps from Democracy to Dictatorship. This book explains how countries can move from being a democracy to a dictatorship. A dictatorship is when one person or a small group has all the power and doesn't listen to the people. The book also talks about how a way of leading called "right-wing populism" works. This is when leaders try to get a lot of support by saying they speak for ordinary people against "the elite."

In 2021, she released another non-fiction book, Together:10 Choices for a Better Now. This book talks about how important it is for people to work together and be kind to each other.

In 2023, she won the El Mundo International Journalism Award. She received this award in the Freedom of the Press category for all her important work.
