About Milliyet Newspaper
The Beginning of Milliyet
Milliyet started as a daily newspaper on May 3, 1950. It was first published in Babıali, Istanbul. The newspaper's first owner was Ali Naci Karacan. After he passed away in 1955, his son, Encüment Karacan, continued to publish the paper.
An Important Editor: Abdi İpekçi
For many years, a very important person for Milliyet was its editor-in-chief, Abdi İpekçi. He helped improve the quality of Turkish journalism. He set high standards for how news should be reported. Sadly, Abdi İpekçi was killed on February 1, 1979.
Milliyet Today
Milliyet is printed in a large size called a broadsheet format. In 2001, about 337,000 copies of Milliyet were printed each day. Its website is also very popular. It is one of the most visited news websites in Europe.
