The Ecuadorian sac-winged bat (scientific name: Balantiopteryx infusca) is a small bat that lives in Colombia and Ecuador. It belongs to a group of bats called sac-winged bats, known for special pouches on their wings.

Sadly, the number of these bats is going down. This is mainly because their homes are being destroyed. People are cutting down forests, which is called deforestation, and this takes away the places where these bats live and find food. Because of this, the Ecuadorian sac-winged bat is on a list of animals that need protection. In 2013, a group called Bat Conservation International said this bat was one of the top 35 species around the world that needed help to survive.

What is the Ecuadorian Sac-Winged Bat?

The Ecuadorian sac-winged bat is a unique type of bat. It's part of the Balantiopteryx family. It is closely related to another bat called Balantiopteryx io. There are no different types or subspecies of the Ecuadorian sac-winged bat.

How to Identify This Bat

This bat is bigger than its close relative, Balantiopteryx io. However, it is smaller than the gray sac-winged bat (Balantiopteryx plicata). You can tell it apart from the gray sac-winged bat because it does not have white edges on its wings. Also, the Ecuadorian sac-winged bat has a darker fur color.

Where Do These Bats Live?

Ecuadorian sac-winged bats like to live in places that offer shelter and some light. You can often find them in the openings of caves, inside old, unused mines, or in cracks within rocks. They prefer spots where there is a good amount of light, not completely dark areas.

These bats are very social animals. They live together in groups called colonies. This means you'll usually find many of them living in the same place. Like many bats, they are also insectivorous, which means their diet mainly consists of insects. They are important for controlling insect populations in their habitats.
