Edward R. Manning (born January 2, 1944 – died March 4, 2011) was an American professional basketball player. He also worked as a coach for college teams and in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Ed Manning was the father of Danny Manning, who also became a famous NBA player and coach.

Ed Manning's College Basketball Journey
Ed Manning played college basketball for the Jackson State University Tigers. He was part of their team from 1963 to 1967. During his time there, he scored an amazing 1,610 points! He was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. In 2003, Ed Manning was honored for his achievements and added to the Jackson State University Sports Hall of Fame.
Playing Professional Basketball
After college, Ed Manning was chosen in the 1967 NBA draft by the Baltimore Bullets. He was the 80th player picked overall.
His Time in the NBA
Manning played for four seasons in the NBA. He played for the Baltimore Bullets, Chicago Bulls, and Portland Trail Blazers. On average, he scored 5.1 points and grabbed 4.5 rebounds per game in the NBA.
Playing in the ABA
After his NBA career, Ed Manning played for five seasons in another league called the ABA (American Basketball Association). He spent three seasons with the Carolina Cougars. He also played one season each for the New York Nets and the Indiana Pacers. In the ABA, he averaged 6.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Later in his career, he even played for some professional teams in Europe.
Coaching and Scouting Career
Ed Manning didn't just play basketball; he also became a coach.
Coaching at the University of Kansas
In 1983, he became an assistant basketball coach at the University of Kansas. He worked under head coach Larry Brown. Manning was part of the coaching staff when the team won the national championship in 1988. This was a huge achievement for the team!
Coaching and Scouting for the Spurs
In 1988, Ed Manning followed Coach Larry Brown to San Antonio. He became an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA. After his coaching role, Manning continued to work for the Spurs as a scout. A scout's job is to find new talented players for the team.
Later Life
Ed Manning passed away on March 4, 2011, in Fort Worth, Texas. He was 67 years old and died from a heart condition.
