Ed Shuttlesworth (born June 4, 1952) is a former American football player. He was a powerful fullback known for his strong running.
Ed played college football for the University of Michigan from 1971 to 1973. He was the top rusher for Michigan's teams in 1972 and 1973. These teams had an amazing record of 20 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. When he finished college, he had carried the ball more times than any other Michigan player. He also ranked third in total rushing yards for the team.
After college, Shuttlesworth played professional football for the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League (CFL) during 1974 and 1975. In his first year, he was the third-best rusher in the entire CFL.

Early Life and High School Football

College Football Career at Michigan
Ed Shuttlesworth started at the University of Michigan in 1970. He quickly became an important player for their football team.
1971 Season: A Strong Start
In 1971, as a sophomore, Ed joined the 1971 Michigan Wolverines football team. This team had a perfect 11-0 record in the regular season. Ed started as a backup fullback.
In his second game, against Virginia, Ed ran for 107 yards. He also scored his first college touchdown. People described him as a "bruising" and strong player. Later that season, he started his first game against Iowa. He rushed for 112 yards and scored three touchdowns in that game.
The next week, he ran for 125 yards and three touchdowns against Purdue. He was named the UPI Midwest Back of the Week. His coach, Bo Schembechler, helped him turn his "raw potential" into "running might."

His best game was against Tulane. He ran for 151 yards and scored three touchdowns. The Associated Press called him "the human bulldozer." Ed said he was working on his "open field running" and learning to "cut and look for the end zone."
Later in the year, he scored a career-high four touchdowns against Minnesota. Ed was Michigan's top rusher in 1972 with 716 yards and 11 touchdowns.
1973 Season: Leading the Undefeated Team
In his senior year, 1973, Ed started all 11 games for the 1973 Michigan Wolverines football team. This team had an amazing undefeated record of 10-0-1. For the second year in a row, he was Michigan's leading rusher. He gained 746 yards and scored nine touchdowns.
In his final game for Michigan, a 10-10 tie with Ohio State, Ed ran for 116 yards. His coach, Bo Schembechler, praised him, saying, "That man Shuttlesworth really ran. He came to play."
In January 1974, Ed played in the Hula Bowl, an all-star game. He led his team to victory with 86 rushing yards. He carried the ball 22 times and said, "I don't mind doing all that work. It's my job."
