Ed Tapscott: A Sports Leader

Ed Tapscott has had a long career in sports, working as both a coach and a leader in basketball teams. He has helped manage and guide several professional teams.

Early Life and Education

Ed Tapscott was born on June 11, 1953. He studied at Tufts University, where he earned his bachelor's degree. Later, he went to American University Washington College of Law and earned a law degree, called a Juris Doctor (J.D.).

Coaching College Basketball

While studying law, Tapscott started his coaching career. In the 1970s, he was an assistant coach at American University. In 1982, he became the head coach for the American University Eagles. He was a very successful coach there. When he left in 1990, he had one of the best winning records in the program's history. After coaching, he used his law degree to work for a sports marketing company called Advantage International.

A Big Win Against Georgetown

One of Coach Tapscott's most famous moments came early in his coaching career. On December 15, 1982, in only his fifth game as head coach, his team, the American University Eagles, played against Georgetown. Georgetown was a very strong team, ranked fifth in the nation, and had a future NBA star named Patrick Ewing.

The Eagles pulled off a big upset, winning 62–61. This game was so exciting that Tapscott wore a heart monitor, and his heart rate jumped very high during the second half! Four years later, he almost beat Georgetown again, but they held on to win. After that, Georgetown's coach, John Thompson, decided not to schedule games against American University anymore.

Working in the NBA

Ed Tapscott moved on to work as an executive in the NBA. He was the very first person hired to lead the Charlotte Bobcats as an Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. He later became president and CEO before leaving in 2006.

Tapscott also worked for the New York Knicks. He was part of their front office and even served as interim president and general manager for a time. He is remembered for helping to build the Knicks team that reached the 1999 NBA Finals.

Coaching the Washington Wizards

In November 2008, Ed Tapscott was working as the director of player development for the Washington Wizards. The team was not doing well, so he was named the interim head coach. He took over after the team had a tough start to the season.

His first game as a professional coach was on November 25, 2008, against the Golden State Warriors, and the Wizards won! For the rest of the 2008–2009 season, Tapscott led the Wizards to an 18–53 record. After the season, a new coach, Flip Saunders, was hired. Tapscott then returned to his role as the team's director of player development.
