Ed Wright (born June 27, 1827 – died December 6, 1895) was an important American leader during the American Civil War. He served as a Union Army officer and later became a politician in Iowa.

Early Life and Moving West

Ed Wright was born in Salem, Ohio, in 1827. He went to public schools there, which helped him get a good start in life. When he was 25 years old, in 1852, he moved to Cedar County, Iowa. In Iowa, he worked as a teacher, helping young people learn. He also used his skills as a carpenter, building things.

Serving in the Iowa Government

Before the Civil War, Ed Wright became involved in politics. He was a member of the Republican Party. He was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives, which is like a state parliament. He served two times:

  • From 1858 to 1862
  • From 1866 to 1868

A Soldier in the Civil War

When the American Civil War began, Ed Wright joined the Union Army. He was made a major in the 24th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. This group of soldiers was sent to Helena, Arkansas.

His unit later joined the 13th Corps, a larger group of soldiers. They fought in many important battles:

  • The Vicksburg Campaign: This was a major effort to capture the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi, which was very important for controlling the Mississippi River.
  • Battle of Champion Hill: During this fierce battle, Major Wright was seriously wounded. Even though he was hurt, he continued to serve.
  • Red River Campaign: Another military operation in the southern states.
  • Sheridan's Shenandoah Campaign: This campaign took place in Virginia and was important for the Union victory.
  • Savannah, Georgia: Wright also served in the final stages of the war, including operations around Savannah.

For his bravery and service, Ed Wright was given a special honor. He was made a brevet brigadier general on March 13, 1865. A "brevet" rank is an honorary promotion given for good service, even if the officer didn't command a unit of that size.

After the War

After the Civil War ended, Ed Wright continued his work in government. In 1866, he was elected as the Secretary of State of Iowa. This is a very important job in a state government, overseeing many official records and elections. He was so good at his job that he was elected three times!
