Edina Müller (born June 28, 1983) is a German Paralympic athlete. She is famous for her success in two different sports: wheelchair basketball and paracanoeing. She has won many medals, including gold at the Paralympic Games.

Edina was a key player for the German women's national wheelchair basketball team. With them, she won a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing. Four years later, she helped her team win a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. After her amazing wheelchair basketball career, she switched to paracanoeing. She continued her success, winning a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio and a gold medal at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo.

Edina Müller's Journey

Edina Müller was born on June 28, 1983, in Brühl (Rhineland), Germany. When she was 16, she faced a big challenge. While playing volleyball, she felt back pain. After a medical procedure, she lost feeling in her legs. Doctors found a blood clot, and she was diagnosed with paraplegia, which means she couldn't move her legs. She spent four months in the hospital.

Even though she now used a wheelchair, Edina wanted to play sports again. She first tried sitting volleyball and then wheelchair tennis. She even won the Hungarian Open in wheelchair tennis in 2005! But she soon found her true passion in wheelchair basketball. She joined the ASV Bonn team.

Becoming a National Star

In 2005, Edina was invited to train with the German national wheelchair basketball team. The very next year, she officially joined the team. She quickly helped them win a bronze medal at the World Championships in Amsterdam.

Her professor, Dr. Horst Strohkendl, encouraged her to play sports in the United States. In 2006, she went to a basketball camp in Illinois. There, she met Michael Frogley, a coach for the Illinois Fighting Illini college team. She joined their team at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She helped them win the National Championship twice, in 2007 and 2008.

During her time in the U.S., she also traveled with the German national team. In 2007, the German women's team became European champions.

Paralympic Success and Awards

After graduating from the University of Illinois in 2008, Edina moved back to Germany. She helped her club team, ASV Bonn, win the European Cup in 2009. From 2011 to 2014, she played for Hamburger SV.

In September 2008, Edina competed in her first Paralympic Games in Beijing. Her team played against the United States in the gold medal game. Even though they lost, they brought home silver medals. Their performance was so impressive that the team was named "Team of the Year" in Germany. They also received the Silbernes Lorbeerblatt (Silver Laurel Leaf), Germany's highest sports award.

Edina and her team continued to shine. They won the European Championship again in 2009. At the 2012 Summer Paralympic Games in London, they faced Australia in the gold medal game. In front of a huge crowd, they won the gold medal! They were awarded another Silver Laurel Leaf and were again named Team of the Year for 2012.

Switching to Paracanoeing

After winning a silver medal at the 2014 World Championships in Toronto, Edina decided to retire from wheelchair basketball. She then started a new challenge: canoeing. She trained hard at the Hamburg Canoe Club.

Edina said that basketball taught her to always aim for big goals. Her coach, Jens Kröger, noted how motivated she was. Her hard work paid off quickly. In May 2015, she won a silver medal in the KL1 200m race at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup in Duisburg. The next year, in May 2016, she won gold at the same event in Duisburg, even after her canoe flipped over during warm-up! This showed her incredible determination.

Edina also works as a rehabilitation therapist. She helps people with spinal cord injuries learn to use wheelchairs. She says it helps that she also uses a wheelchair, as she understands their journey.
