José Edmílson Gomes de Moraes (born July 10, 1976), known as Edmílson, is a Brazilian football expert and former player. He used to play as a defensive midfielder or a central defender. He played for big clubs like São Paulo, Lyon, and Barcelona.

Edmílson also played for the Brazilian national team 39 times. He was a key player when Brazil won the World Cup in 2002. Today, he works as a technical consultant for São Caetano.

Edmílson's Football Journey

Edmílson started his professional football career in Brazil. He later played in France and Spain. He was known for his smart play and ability to defend.

Early Career in Brazil and France

Edmílson was born in Taquaritinga, Brazil. He joined São Paulo FC in 1995. While playing for São Paulo, he helped them win two Campeonato Paulista titles. These are important championships in Brazil.

In 2000, Edmílson moved to France to play for Lyon. He quickly became an important player there. In his first season, Lyon won the League Cup. Over the next few years, he helped Lyon win three Ligue 1 titles in a row. This was a very successful time for the club.

Playing for FC Barcelona

In July 2004, Edmílson moved to Spain to play for FC Barcelona. This was a big step in his career. He joined a team that was becoming one of the best in the world.

His first season with Barcelona was tough because of an injury. He only played a few games. But he worked hard to recover.

For the 2005–06 season, Edmílson was back and playing well. He played in 41 games across all competitions. He helped Barcelona win the Spanish league title, La Liga. Even more exciting, they also won the UEFA Champions League that season! This is one of the biggest club trophies in football. Edmílson played in the first half of the Champions League final against Arsenal.

After the 2007–08 season, Edmílson left Barcelona.

Later Years in Football

After leaving Barcelona, Edmílson signed with Villarreal CF in Spain in 2008. A few months later, he returned to Brazil. He joined Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras in 2009. He even scored his first goal for Palmeiras in the Copa Libertadores, a major South American club competition.

In 2010, Edmílson went back to Spain. He signed with Real Zaragoza. He helped the team avoid being relegated to a lower league. He stayed with Zaragoza for another year.

In June 2011, Edmílson returned to Brazil one last time. He joined Ceará Sporting Club. He played there until he retired from professional football at the end of 2011.

Edmílson's International Career

Edmílson also had a great career playing for his country, Brazil. He first played for the national team in July 2000.

Winning the World Cup

The biggest moment of his international career was the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea. Edmílson was chosen to be part of the Brazilian squad. He played in six out of seven games in the tournament. He helped Brazil win their fifth World Cup title!

He scored his first and only goal for Brazil during this World Cup. It was a fantastic goal in a 5–2 group stage win against Costa Rica.

Unfortunately, Edmílson had to miss the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. He got a knee injury during training right before the tournament.

How Edmílson Played

Edmílson was a very smart and flexible player. He had good technique and was elegant on the field. He usually played as a defensive midfielder for Barcelona. This role means he helped protect the defense and start attacks.

He could also play as a defender. With Lyon, he played both in the middle of the field and as a central defender on the right side. For Brazil in the 2002 World Cup, he played as a central defender in a three-man defense. His ability to play in different positions made him very valuable to his teams.

Edmílson is a very religious person. He became an evangelical Christian when he was 16 years old.
