José Edmílson Gomes de Moraes (born 10 July 1976), known as Edmílson, is a Brazilian football expert and former professional footballer. He works as a technical consultant for São Caetano.
Edmílson could play as a defensive midfielder or a central defender. He played for teams in three different countries during his career. He was very successful with clubs like São Paulo, Lyon, and Barcelona. He played four seasons with Lyon and four with Barcelona.
He played 39 games for the Brazilian national team. Edmílson was part of the team that won the 2002 World Cup.

Edmílson's Club Career
Starting in Brazil and Moving to France
Edmílson was born in Taquaritinga, São Paulo, Brazil. He joined São Paulo FC in 1995. While playing for São Paulo, he helped them win two Campeonato Paulista titles.
In 2000, he moved to France and joined Olympique Lyonnais. Another Brazilian player, Cláudio Caçapa, also joined Lyon at the same time. Edmílson was important for the team. In his first season, they won the League Cup in 2000–01.
Later, Juninho Pernambucano also joined Lyon. Edmílson and Juninho often played together in the middle of the field. They helped Lyon win three Ligue 1 titles in a row.
Playing for FC Barcelona
In July 2004, Edmílson signed with FC Barcelona in Spain. He made his first La Liga appearance on 19 September in a 1–1 draw against Atlético Madrid. In his first season, 2004–05, he only played six matches because of an injury. He had to leave a game early in October and was out for several months.
Edmílson fully recovered for the 2005–06 season. He played 41 games in all competitions. He was a key player for Frank Rijkaard's team. They won the Spanish league and the UEFA Champions League that season. In the Champions League, he played in nine matches, including the first half of the final against Arsenal.
After the 2007–08 season, Edmílson left Barcelona. He was 32 years old, and his contract was not renewed.
Later Years in Football
On 23 May 2008, Edmílson signed a one-year contract with Villarreal CF in Spain. However, after only a few months, he went back to Brazil. He joined Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras on a two-year deal. He scored his first goal for Palmeiras in the Copa Libertadores on 29 January 2009.
In January 2010, Edmílson left Palmeiras. He returned to Spain and joined Real Zaragoza. He had an Italian passport, so he was not counted as a foreign player. He played regularly and helped Zaragoza avoid being relegated from the league. His contract was extended for another year.
On 12 September 2010, Edmílson scored his first goal for Zaragoza in a 3–5 loss against Málaga CF. In June 2011, he returned to Brazil and joined Ceará Sporting Club. He played there until he retired from football at the end of 2011.
Edmílson's International Career
Edmílson played his first game for the Brazilian national team on 18 July 2000, against Paraguay.
He was chosen to play in the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea. He helped Brazil win their fifth World Cup title. He played in six of the seven games. He scored his first and only international goal in a 5–2 group stage win against Costa Rica.
Edmílson was also selected for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. However, he had to leave the squad before the tournament. He got a knee injury during training.

How Edmílson Played
Edmílson was a graceful and flexible defensive player. He had good technique and skill. When he played for Barcelona, he usually played as a holding midfielder. This means he played in front of the defenders to protect the goal.
However, he also played as a defender throughout his career. At Lyon, he played both in the middle of the field and as a central defender on the right side. For Brazil in the 2002 World Cup, he played as a central defender in a three-player defense.
Personal Life
Edmílson is a very religious person. He is a devoted evangelical Christian. He became a Christian when he was 16 years old.
