Edmund Robertson, 1st Baron Lochee (born October 28, 1845 – died September 13, 1911) was a Scottish lawyer, university teacher, and a politician from the Liberal Party. He held important roles in the British government.

Early Life and Education

Edmund Robertson was born in Perthshire, Scotland. He went to St Andrews University and then to Corpus Christi College, Oxford, which are both famous universities.

In 1872, he became a "fellow" at Corpus Christi College. This meant he was a senior member of the college, often involved in teaching and research. He also taught law to people who were training to become lawyers.

Robertson was very interested in law and government. He wrote articles about legal and constitutional topics for the Encyclopædia Britannica, which is a large encyclopedia. In 1895, he became a Queen's Counsel. This is a special title given to experienced lawyers in the UK.

Edmund Robertson was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Dundee. An MP is a person chosen by voters to represent them in the UK Parliament. He served as an MP from 1885 to 1908.

During his time in Parliament, he held several important jobs:

  • From 1892 to 1895, he was the Civil Lord of the Admiralty. This role involved helping to manage the Royal Navy, especially its finances and civilian staff.
  • From 1905 to 1908, he was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty. This was another key role in managing the navy, working closely with the government.

In 1905, he became a Privy Counsellor. This is a group of senior advisors to the British monarch. In 1908, he was given the title of Baron Lochee. This meant he became a "peer" and could sit in the House of Lords, which is part of the UK Parliament.

Later Life

Lord Lochee passed away in September 1911 when he was 65 years old. Since he did not have any children to inherit his title, the title of Baron Lochee ended with him.
