Edmund Waller was born in December 1838. His birthplace was Bishop's Tachbrook in Warwickshire, England. His father, Ernest Adolphus Waller, was a reverend in the Church of England.
School Days and Cricket
Edmund went to school at Marlborough College. While there, he was a very good cricketer. He even became the captain of his college cricket team. This shows he was a skilled player and a leader.
Serving in the Army
After finishing school, Edmund joined the British Army. He started as an ensign, which is a very junior officer rank. He joined the 7th Royal Fusiliers regiment.
In July 1858, he was promoted to lieutenant. This is a higher officer rank. Later, in May 1866, he became a captain. This shows he moved up through the army ranks.
His Cricket Career
Edmund Waller played in only one first-class cricket match. This is the highest level of cricket played at the time. He played for a team called the Gentlemen of Kent. Their opponents were the Gentlemen of Marylebone Cricket Club.
The match took place in 1865 at St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury. Edmund batted twice in the game. In the first innings, he scored 16 runs. In the second innings, he scored 6 runs. Both times, he was bowled out by a player named Henry Arkwright.
