How Edna Began
A dairyman named Edgar Steele started the community. He bought a huge piece of land, about 58,000 acres, and built homes for his workers. Later, in 1883, Lynford Maxwell divided the land into smaller parts and called it Maxwellton. But the people living there decided to rename it Edna.
Early Industries and Wine Today
In the 1880s and 1890s, people mined for a type of rock called bituminous rock, which contains coal tar. More recently, growing wine grapes has become the most important business in the area. The Edna Valley AVA is now well-known for its wine.
