Edna Brown (born April 7, 1940 – died January 1, 2022) was an important American politician. She was a member of the Democratic Party. Edna Brown served in the Ohio Senate from 2011 to 2018. She also worked in the Ohio House of Representatives from 2001 to 2010.

Edna Brown's Public Service Career

Edna Brown spent many years working for the public. She worked for the city of Toledo, Ohio for 32 years. After that, she served on the Toledo City Council for six years.

Serving in the Ohio House of Representatives

In 2001, Edna Brown was chosen to join the Ohio House of Representatives. She took over the seat when Jack Ford became the Mayor of Toledo. She was then elected to her first full term in 2002. She won by a large number of votes.

Edna Brown was re-elected several times. She won her elections in 2004, 2006, and 2008.

In 2004, Edna Brown was chosen for a special role. She joined the executive committee of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. This group helps Black lawmakers work together. She also served as a leader in the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus.

Moving to the Ohio Senate

In 2009, Edna Brown decided to run for the Ohio Senate. She wanted to take the place of Teresa Fedor, who could not run again. Brown won the election in 2010. She defeated her opponent by many votes.

On January 3, 2011, Edna Brown officially became a state senator. She made history as the first African-American person to represent the city of Toledo in the state Senate.

In the Senate, her fellow lawmakers chose her for an important job. She became the Senate Minority Whip. This role means she helped organize her party's votes and make sure everyone was working together.

She was also a member of several important committees. These committees worked on topics like agriculture, health, and financial rules. She also served on boards that helped children and looked into correctional facilities.

Death

Edna Brown passed away in Ohio on January 1, 2022. She was 81 years old.
