History of Edson
Early Land Surveys
The land that became the Town of Edson was first measured in 1848. Crews working for the U.S. government did this work. They surveyed the land, which was divided into 6-mile by 6-mile squares.
In 1853, another group of surveyors marked the corners of each section. A section is a smaller square of land. They walked through forests and swamps. They used tools like a chain and a compass to measure the land.
What the Surveyors Found
After their work, the main surveyor wrote a description of the land. He said the area had:
- Few swamps
- A slightly rolling surface
- Good soil
- Excellent timber (trees)
He also noted that most streams were small. One stream in the northwest had marshy banks. Another stream flowed through the eastern parts of the township. At that time, there was only one building. It was a lumberman's cabin near the center of the area.
