Eduardo García de Enterría y Martínez-Carande (born April 27, 1923 – died September 16, 2013) was a very important Spanish jurist. A jurist is someone who studies and works with laws. He made big contributions to the study and teaching of Public Law in Spain. Public Law deals with how the government works and how it interacts with people. In 1984, he received the Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences. This award recognized his important research and teaching.

Early Life and Education
Eduardo García de Enterría was born in Ramales de la Victoria, a town in Spain. This area is now known as Cantabria. He studied law at the Universities of Barcelona and Madrid. He earned his highest degree, a Doctorate, with honors from Madrid. Later, he continued his studies in London and Jena, Germany.
His Important Work in Law
In 1947, Eduardo García de Enterría became a lawyer for the Spanish Council of State. This is a special group that advises the government on legal matters. Later, in 1957, he became a professor of Administrative Law at the University of Valladolid. Administrative Law is about the rules and regulations that government agencies follow.
He joined the law faculty at the Complutense University of Madrid in 1962. From 1970, he led the department there. After 1988, he was a special Professor Emeritus in Madrid. This title is given to retired professors who are still highly respected.
International Contributions
Eduardo García de Enterría was the first Spanish judge on the European Court of Human Rights. This court is in Strassbourg and protects human rights across Europe. He served there from 1978 to 1986.
He also led the Fédération International pour le Droit Européen (FIDE). This group focuses on European law. He also started and led the Spanish Association for the Study of European Law. He was part of the Academic Council at the European Law Research Center at Harvard Law School in the United States.
He helped start the "World Society of Friends of Jorge Luis Borges." Borges was a famous writer. Eduardo García de Enterría also founded the Revista Española de Derecho Administrativo (Spanish Journal of Administrative Law) in 1974. He directed this journal until he passed away. He also worked on many other Spanish and European law journals.
His law office in Madrid helped create and register NGOs. NGOs are non-governmental organizations, which are groups that work for social causes. He also helped write several Spanish laws. This included the important Spanish Constitution of 1978.
Awards and Recognition
Academic Positions
From 1970, he was an important member of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation. This is a group of top legal experts. In 1984, he joined the Royal Spanish Academy, which focuses on the Spanish language. In 2004, he became a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Italy. He also received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from many universities. This special honor was given by over a dozen universities in Spain and Latin America, and also by the Sorbonne in France.
