A General's Life

Early Career and Republic

Eduardo López Ochoa was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1877. He became a general in the Spanish army. When the Second Spanish Republic was declared in 1931, he was named the capitán general (a high-ranking military leader) of Catalonia. This was a very important role.

Role in Asturias

In October 1934, a rebellion happened in Asturias, a region in Spain. General López Ochoa was sent to help stop this uprising. He led troops to restore order. After the events in Asturias, some people on the left side of politics felt that he had betrayed them. They even gave him the nickname "the butcher of Asturias."

However, people on the right side of politics also had mixed feelings about him. They did not fully trust him. This was partly because he was a Freemason. Also, he had tried to talk with the miners involved in the Asturian events. He also punished some soldiers who were too violent or harmed prisoners unfairly. He wanted to make sure that such bad actions did not happen again.

Final Days

When the Spanish Civil War began in 1936, General López Ochoa was in a military hospital in Carabanchel. He was facing some serious accusations at the time.

There was a lot of violence happening in Madrid. The government tried to move General Ochoa from the hospital to a safer place. However, large, angry crowds stopped them twice. A third attempt was made, but the general was taken away by a crowd. He died on August 19, 1936.
