Who Was Edward Brampton?
Sir Edward Brampton was born around 1440. His original name was Duarte Brandão. He came from the Jewish community in Lisbon, Portugal.
His Early Life
Duarte Brandão grew up following the Jewish faith. We don't know for sure who his parents were. Some people think his mother was Christian and his father, Rui Barba, was Jewish. Another idea is that Rui Barba was Christian and had a child with a Jewish woman. Later records in Portugal suggest his father might have been Fernão Rodrigues Alardo, who was a main alcaide (a kind of castle governor) in Leiria and Óbidos.
Life in England
Duarte moved from Portugal to England in the late 1450s. To be accepted at the royal court, he changed his religion to Catholic Christianity. King Edward IV himself supported him during this change. After his conversion, he took the English name Edward Brampton to honor the King.
A Knight and Governor
Brampton was an adventurer, a soldier, and a ship's commander. He fought in several battles during the War of the Roses, which was a big war in England. One of these battles was the Battle of Tewkesbury. Because of his service, he was given the job of Governor of Guernsey.
He was married to Lady Margaret Brampton. With her help, he gained favor with both the Portuguese and English royal families. In August 1484, King Richard III made him a knight.
Family and Later Years
After King Richard III was defeated, Brampton left England. He went to the court of Margaret of Burgundy. It's thought that he met Perkin Warbeck there. Perkin Warbeck was someone who claimed to be the rightful king of England, and Brampton later hired him.
Edward and Lady Margaret Brampton had six children together. Their names were João, Jorge, Henrique, Isabel, Maria, and Joana.
