Edward John Burrow (1785 – 8 August 1861) was an English church leader and writer. He was known for his religious work and for writing on various topics. He also held important positions in the church.

A Life of Learning and Service

Edward John Burrow was a very learned man. He studied at Magdalene College, Cambridge and later at Trinity College, Oxford. He earned several degrees, including a Doctor of Divinity (D.D.) in 1820. This showed his deep knowledge of theology.

Early Church Roles

Burrow served as a church minister in different places. From 1810 to 1816, he was in charge of the church in Bempton, Yorkshire. Then, from 1816 to 1823, he was a minister at a chapel in Hampstead. He also worked as a personal chaplain for the bishop of Winchester, named Tomline.

In 1827, Burrow became the principal of a college and school in Mount Radford, Exeter. He started his new job in September 1827. However, he left this position a few months later in January.

Service Abroad

In 1835, Edward Burrow moved to Gibraltar. There, he served as a civil chaplain, helping the community. In 1842, he was given the important title of Archdeacon of Gibraltar. He stayed in Gibraltar until 1859. By then, his health was not very good.

He returned to England and lived in places like Lyme Regis on the south coast. Edward John Burrow passed away in Honiton on 8 August 1861. His wife, Emma Margaret, died several years later in 1871.

His Writings

Edward John Burrow wrote several books and papers on different subjects. Here are some of his notable works:

  • Elements of Conchology (1815) – This book was about conchology, which is the study of seashells.
  • The Elgin Marbles (1817, 1837) – This work focused on the famous ancient Greek sculptures known as the Elgin Marbles.
  • A Letter … to W. Marsh … on the nature … of certain principles … falsely denominated Evangelical (1819) and A Second Letter (1819) – These were letters discussing religious principles.
  • A Summary of Christian Faith and Practice (1822) – A book explaining Christian beliefs and how to live.
  • Questions on Memorial Scripture Copies (1829) – A book with questions related to the Bible.
  • Hours of Devotion (1830) – This was a translation of a German book by Heinrich Zschokke.
  • School Companion to the Bible (1831) – A helpful guide for students studying the Bible.
