Sir Edward Coey (born March 1805 – died 26 June 1887) was a very successful businessman and a kind person from Larne in County Antrim. He is remembered for helping to start Larne Grammar School in his hometown. He also served as the Mayor of Belfast.

From Apprentice to Entrepreneur

Edward Coey was born in Larne. He began his working life as an apprentice butcher. This means he learned the trade by working for someone else.

He soon started his own business. With his brother James, he opened the 'Northern Shoe & Boot House' in Belfast. After spending a short time working in the United States, Coey returned to Belfast. In 1841, he started a new business called Coey & Co. This company sold food and prepared meats. It was located in the busy dockland area of Belfast.

His food business became very successful. This allowed Coey to expand his business interests. He invested in property in Belfast, London, and Liverpool. He also owned property in the United States.

Serving the City

Sir Edward Coey was not just a businessman. He also played an important role in public life. He served as a city councillor for the St George's Ward in Belfast.

In 1861, he made history by becoming the first and only Liberal politician to serve as the Mayor of Belfast. This was a big achievement. In the same year, he was given the title of 'Sir' (knighted). This was to recognize all his hard work for the public.

Other Important Roles

Coey held many other important positions. In 1867, he was made a deputy lieutenant and the High Sheriff of County Antrim. These were important roles in local government.

He also served as a Borough Magistrate in Belfast. This meant he helped with local justice. He was a member of the Grand Jury. He also worked with the Belfast Harbour Commissioners. This group managed the busy port of Belfast. In July 1869, he was one of the eight people who helped start the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This organization helps businesses grow.

Helping Others

Sir Edward Coey is especially remembered for his generous spirit. He gave money to many good causes. His most famous donation helped to establish a grammar school in Larne. He worked with John Crawford to make this happen. The school opened in 1886 as Larne Grammar School.

But his kindness went much further. He gave money to many different charities. These included the Belfast Charitable Society and the Presbyterian Orphan Society. He also supported the Presbyterian Sabbath School.

Coey was a patron, or supporter, of several other organizations. He supported the Belfast Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He also helped the Belfast Sailors Home. He was a life Governor of the Belfast Royal Hospital. He also helped the Belfast District Hospital for the Insane Poor and the Belfast Ophthalmic Hospital.

Remembering Sir Edward Coey

On 18 November 2006, the Ulster History Circle honored Sir Edward Coey. They placed a blue plaque on his former home. This home was Merville House, located in Merville Garden Village. Sir Edward Coey passed away there on 27 June 1887. The blue plaque helps people remember his important contributions.
