Edward Pasqual Dozier (born Eduardo de Pascua Dozier; 1916 – 1971) was a Pueblo Native American anthropologist and linguist. He studied Native American cultures and also the people of northern Luzon in the Philippines.

An anthropologist studies human societies and cultures. A linguist studies languages. Edward Dozier was important because he helped us understand different ways of life and how people communicate.

Early Life and Family

Edward Dozier was from Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico. He was part of the Tewa people. Until he was 12 years old, he only spoke the Tewa language.

His father, Thomas Dozier, was an Anglo-American schoolteacher. He was adopted into a Tewa clan. Edward's mother, Maria Lucaria Gutierrez, was a member of the Tewa Badger clan. Her Tewa name was P'oo kwi tsaawaa. Edward and his brothers and sisters were raised as members of the Winter moiety of the Santa Clara pueblo. A moiety is like one of two main groups in a community.

Military Service and Name Change

During World War II, Edward Dozier served in the US Army Air Corps. He was in the Pacific theater of the war. At this time, he changed his name from Eduardo de Pascua Dozier to Edward P. Dozier. This is called anglicizing his name, making it sound more English.

Education and Career

Edward Dozier was a dedicated student. He earned his first degree, a BA, in anthropology from the University of New Mexico in 1947. He then earned a MA from the same university.

He continued his studies and received his highest degree, a PhD, from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1952.

Starting in 1953, he began teaching at different universities. He eventually taught at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
