Edward Fenwick Dickinson (born January 21, 1829 – died August 25, 1891) was an American politician. He served as a U.S. Representative for Ohio for one term. This was from 1869 to 1871.

Edward Dickinson's Early Life and Education

Edward Fenwick Dickinson was born in Fremont, Ohio. His parents were Rodolphus Dickinson and Marguerite Beaugrand Dickinson. Edward went to public schools in his hometown.

He later attended St. Xavier College in Cincinnati, Ohio. There, he studied law. After finishing his studies, he became a lawyer. He started his law practice in Fremont, Ohio.

Becoming a Lawyer and Prosecutor

In 1852, Edward Dickinson became the prosecuting attorney for Sandusky County, Ohio. A prosecuting attorney is a lawyer who works for the government. Their job is to bring legal cases against people accused of crimes. He held this job for two years before leaving.

In 1852, he married Henrietta R. Mitchner. They had three children together.

Serving in the Civil War

During the American Civil War, Edward Dickinson joined the Union Army. He started as a lieutenant. Later, he was promoted to captain. He served as a quartermaster for Company G of the Eighth Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. A quartermaster is in charge of supplies and equipment for a military unit.

Political Career and Public Service

After the Civil War ended, Dickinson continued his public service. From 1866 to 1869, he worked as a probate judge for Sandusky County. A probate judge handles legal matters related to wills, estates, and guardianships.

Serving in Congress

In 1869, Edward Dickinson was elected to the Forty-first Congress. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He served as a U.S. Representative from March 4, 1869, to March 3, 1871.

He tried to be re-elected in 1870 but was not successful. After his time in Congress, he went back to working as a lawyer.

Mayor and Judge Again

Edward Dickinson was elected mayor of Fremont several times. He served as mayor in 1871, 1873, and 1875. The mayor is the head of the city government.

He also returned to his role as a probate judge for Sandusky County. He served from 1877 to 1879 and again from 1885 until his death.

Later Life and Legacy

Edward Fenwick Dickinson passed away in Fremont, Ohio on August 25, 1891. He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
