Life and Religious Journey
Edward Kmiec was born in Trenton, New Jersey, on June 4, 1936. When he was 25 years old, he became a priest. He was ordained for the Diocese of Trenton in Rome on December 20, 1961. This was a big step in his religious career.
Becoming an Auxiliary Bishop
On August 26, 1982, Pope John Paul II chose Kmiec to be an auxiliary bishop. This meant he would help lead the Diocese of Trenton. He was officially made a bishop on November 3, 1982. Bishop John C. Reiss led this special ceremony.
Leading the Diocese of Nashville
Pope John Paul II later appointed Kmiec as the bishop of the Diocese of Nashville. This happened on October 13, 1992. He officially began his role there on December 3, 1992. As bishop, he was responsible for many churches and Catholic communities in that area.
Serving as Bishop of Buffalo
On August 12, 2004, Bishop Kmiec was chosen to lead the Diocese of Buffalo. This was another appointment by Pope John Paul II. He officially started his work in Buffalo on October 28, 2004.
As bishop, he worked to manage the diocese's finances. In 2007, he announced that the diocese had a balanced budget. This was a good sign, as they had reduced a large deficit from the year before.
During his time in Buffalo, Bishop Kmiec made some difficult decisions. He oversaw changes that reduced the number of parishes (local church communities) from 274 in 2005 to 170 by 2011. He also oversaw the closure of 25 elementary schools. These changes aimed to help the diocese manage its resources better.
Retirement and Passing
On May 29, 2012, Bishop Kmiec retired from his role in Buffalo. Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation. Bishop Richard Joseph Malone took over as the new bishop.
Edward Kmiec passed away in Buffalo on July 11, 2020. He was 84 years old.
