David Raymond Choby (born January 17, 1947 – died June 3, 2017) was an American leader in the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the 11th Bishop of the Diocese of Nashville in Tennessee. He held this important role from 2005 until he passed away in 2017. Before becoming bishop, he helped manage the diocese from 2004 to 2006.

Biography

Growing Up

David Choby was born on January 17, 1947, in Nashville, Tennessee. His parents were Raymond and Rita Choby. He also had a sister named Diane.

David was baptized in the Cathedral Church of the Incarnation in Nashville. This was the same church where he would later become a bishop. He went to Catholic schools and graduated from Father Ryan High School in Nashville in 1965.

After high school, David spent a year at Aquinas College in Nashville. He then went to a seminary, which is a special school for people studying to become priests. He studied at St. Ambrose College in Iowa and later at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Becoming a Priest

David Choby became a priest for the Diocese of Nashville on September 6, 1974. He was ordained by Bishop Joseph A. Durick at St. Henry Church in Belle Meade, Tennessee.

As a priest, David served in several parishes. He was an associate pastor at St. Joseph Parish in Madison, Tennessee. He also managed St. Ann Parish in Nashville. For three years, he lived at Christ the King Parish in Nashville while working for the Diocesan Tribunal. In 1989, he became the pastor at St. John Vianney Parish in Gallatin, Tennessee. He was very involved in the community there.

David also studied at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. There, he earned a degree in canon law, which is the law of the Catholic Church. He worked as a member of the diocesan tribunal for most of his time as a priest. He also served on important councils for the diocese. From 1984 to 1989, David taught at the Pontifical College Josephinum, a seminary in Ohio.

On August 12, 2004, Pope John Paul II appointed Nashville Bishop Edward U. Kmiec to lead the Diocese of Buffalo. After this, David Choby was chosen to manage the Nashville diocese temporarily.

Leading the Diocese

Pope Benedict XVI appointed David Choby as the new bishop of the Diocese of Nashville on December 20, 2005. He was only the second priest from Nashville to become its bishop. He officially became bishop and was installed on February 27, 2006. This special ceremony took place in the Cathedral Church of the Incarnation in Nashville.

As bishop, David Choby chose a special motto: "That We May Live." This phrase comes from a prayer used in Catholic Mass. He also became a board member of the Josephinum seminary.

Later Years and Passing

In his later years, Bishop Choby had two falls. The second fall, in February 2017, caused serious injuries. Because of this, he had to ask Reverend David Perkin to take over the daily management of the diocese.

David Choby passed away in Nashville on June 3, 2017. He died from infections that resulted from his injuries.
