What Makes the Edward L. Cleveland House Special?
The Cleveland House is a large, two-and-a-half-story building. It is made of wood and sits on a strong brick foundation. You can find it on a big grassy lot at the corner of Court and Columbia Streets.
How the House Looks
This house has a unique shape, which is common for Queen Anne style homes. It has a round tower on one corner. A wide porch wraps around the front and side of the house. This porch has tall, fancy columns that show the Colonial Revival style.
The front of the house faces east and has three main sections. The round tower is on the left side. The main door is in the middle. Above the door, there is a special enclosed porch with a curved roof. This porch has two round-arch windows. Inside the house, you can find beautiful old wooden details.
Who Was Edward L. Cleveland?
Edward L. Cleveland was born in Camden, Maine. He first worked as a merchant in Boston, Massachusetts. Around 1878, he moved to Houlton. There, he started a business shipping potatoes. His company quickly became one of the largest in Aroostook County. At that time, potatoes were the most important crop in the area.
By 1908, Mr. Cleveland had huge warehouses. He could store enough potatoes to fill 500,000 bushels. He shipped these potatoes all over the eastern United States. Edward Cleveland was also active in politics. He served in the state legislature, helping to make laws for Maine.
Building a New Home After a Big Fire
In 1902, a large fire destroyed much of downtown Houlton. Many businesses and homes were lost, including Edward Cleveland's house. Soon after the fire, he bought the land to build his new home. We do not know who designed the house.
The Edward L. Cleveland House remained his home until he passed away in 1939. His daughter sold the house in 1960.
