The Life of Ned Lambton

Early Life and Unique Birth Celebration

Ned Lambton was born in 1961. He was the youngest child and only son of Belinda Blew-Jones and Antony, Viscount Lambton. His father was the eldest son of John Lambton, 5th Earl of Durham.

Ned was born after five daughters. To celebrate his birth as the future heir, a huge bonfire was lit. This bonfire was placed at the top of Penshaw Hill. This hill used to be part of the Lambton Estate.

On April 23, 1962, Ned was baptised by Maurice Harland, who was the Bishop of Durham. The ceremony took place in the church of St Barnabas, Burnmoor. An ox was roasted as part of the big celebrations.

His godparents were very important people. They included former Prime Minister Anthony Eden, the Earl of Avon. Also, Prince Stanisław Albrecht Radziwiłł, journalist Joseph Alsop, and socialite Babe Paley were his godparents. Ned has five older sisters. Lady Lucinda Lambton, a well-known broadcaster, is the oldest of them.

Family Titles and Changes

When Ned's grandfather passed away in 1970, his father became the 6th Earl of Durham. However, his father decided to give up his noble titles. This is called "disclaiming" a peerage. He did this on February 23, 1970.

For a short time, Ned was known by the special title of Viscount Lambton. After his father gave up his titles, Ned was called Lord Durham. This was to avoid confusion with his father. His father continued to use the name Lord Lambton, even though he had given up his official titles.

Involvement in Politics

In 1997, Ned Lambton decided to get involved in politics. He stood for the Referendum Party in the general election. He ran in the area of Berwick-upon-Tweed. This was the same area his father had represented before. He received 3.4% of the votes in that election.

Becoming the Earl of Durham

In 2006, Ned's father passed away. Ned then became the 7th Earl of Durham. This meant he inherited the noble title. He also inherited Villa Cetinale, a beautiful 17th-century villa in Tuscany, Italy. This villa had belonged to his father.
