Edward Nettleship (born March 3, 1845 – died October 30, 1913) was an important English eye doctor, also known as an ophthalmologist. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and the Chemical Society (FCS), which means he was recognized for his scientific work.

Who Was Edward Nettleship?

Edward Nettleship was born in Kettering, England. He studied medicine at King's College London. After his studies, he worked with famous doctors like Jonathan Hutchinson and Warren Tay at important hospitals in London. These included the London Hospital and the Moorfields Eye Hospital.

He spent almost 20 years at St. Thomas Hospital in London. There, he was an eye surgeon and a teacher. He even mentored another well-known eye doctor, Charles Howard Usher. The Nettleship Medal, an award for eye doctors, was created to honor his contributions.

His Work on Eye Problems

Edward Nettleship is best known for his research on eye problems that people inherit from their families. He made big discoveries about conditions like:

  • Ocular albinism: This affects the color of the eyes and can cause vision problems.
  • Retinitis pigmentosa: This is a group of eye diseases that cause vision loss over time.
  • Hereditary night blindness: This makes it hard to see in dim light or at night.

Before he became an eye specialist, Nettleship also studied veterinary medicine (animal health) and dermatology (skin conditions). In 1869, he was one of the first to describe a skin condition called urticaria pigmentosa.

His Family

Edward Nettleship came from a family of talented people. Of his five brothers:

  • His oldest brother, Henry Nettleship, was a famous classical scholar.
  • His second brother, John Trivett Nettleship, was a well-known artist.
  • His youngest brother, Richard Lewis Nettleship, was a respected philosopher.
