Sir Jonathan Hutchinson (born July 23, 1828 – died June 23, 1913) was a very important English doctor. He was a surgeon, which means he performed operations. He also specialized in many areas, like being an eye doctor (ophthalmologist), a skin doctor (dermatologist), and studying diseases (pathologist). He made many important discoveries in medicine.

Jonathan Hutchinson was born in Selby, England. His family were Quakers, a type of Christian group. He went to a local school. When he was young, he trained for five years with Caleb Williams. Caleb was a pharmacist and surgeon in York.

In 1850, Jonathan moved to London. He studied at St Bartholomew's Hospital. He quickly became known as a skilled surgeon. He also became a great scientific researcher. Sir James Paget, a famous surgeon, helped him a lot.

Becoming a Specialist Doctor

In 1851, Hutchinson started studying eye diseases. He worked at the London Ophthalmic Hospital. Over the years, he worked at many different hospitals. These included the Lock Hospital and the London Hospital. He also worked at the Blackfriars Hospital for Skin Diseases.

He was very busy in many medical fields. This led him to join several medical groups. He was the president of the Hunterian Society. He also led the Pathological Society. Later, he became president of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1889.

Helping the Government

Jonathan Hutchinson also helped the government. He was part of two royal commissions. These groups looked into important health issues. One group studied how to care for people with smallpox. The other group looked at vaccination and leprosy. In 1882, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very high honor for scientists. Some people even call him the "father of oral medicine."

Hutchinson worked tirelessly for science and medicine. He wrote over 1,200 medical articles. He also created a special magazine called Archives of Surgery. He was the only writer for this magazine from 1890 to 1900. His lectures were full of new ideas. He taught about nerve diseases, gout, leprosy, and tongue problems.

He started the Medical Graduates’ College and Polyclinic. He also opened educational museums. These museums taught people about natural history. One was in his hometown of Selby. Another was in Haslemere, Surrey. He received special degrees from the University of Glasgow and University of Cambridge. In 1908, he was given a knighthood. This meant he was called "Sir Jonathan Hutchinson."

Medical Discoveries

Hutchinson's name is linked to several medical conditions. One famous example is Hutchinson–Gilford progeria syndrome. This is a very rare disease that causes children to age very quickly. He was the first doctor to describe it.

Even after he retired, he stayed interested in leprosy. He believed that eating salted or rotten fish caused leprosy. However, this idea was later proven wrong. Scientists discovered that a tiny germ called Mycobacterium leprae causes leprosy. This germ was found in 1873.

Family Life

In 1856, Jonathan Hutchinson married Jane Pynsent West. They had ten children together. They had six sons and four daughters. His son, also named Jonathan, became an eye surgeon. He continued his father's work. Jonathan Hutchinson founded the Haslemere Educational Museum in 1888. His granddaughter, Margaret Hutchinson, became a teacher and naturalist. Sir Jonathan Hutchinson passed away on June 23, 1913, in Haslemere.
